It was just a few days ago that we had first written about the much talked about ZTE made Firefox OS powered smartphone. The ZTE Open – as the handset is being christened was put on sale to a worldwide audience last week via eBay shops in the US and UK. A little more than a week after that, we now have reports that the phone has since then gone out of stock. Those of you who were looking forward to get one of this as soon as possible might just be out of luck for the time being.
This is not the first time that a phone running Firefox OS was sold out this quickly. In fact, not long ago Spanish startup Geekphone’s developer-only Firefox based handsets were sold out within hours of its launch!
That said, there is no doubt that this time, the launch was a direct consumer sales affair. There is also increasing consensus on the view that there is a strong interest in the Firefox OS phone which is reflected in the sales of the device.
Like we had mentioned in our previous post on the ZTE Open, the device is available through Deutsche Telekom in Poland. In other countries like Colombia, Spain, and Venezuela Telefónica offers it via its subsidiaries. More markets are expected to be added to the list in the not too distant future. In spite of the popularity of the phone, no carrier from the US or the UK have agreed to offer the handset on their networks.
One of the reasons for this might be the fact that at least for the time being, Mozilla is promoting the Firefox OS as a platform for low to mid range, affordable devices – a market which has more target consumers in developing and emerging economies.
Let us know if you are planning to get this phone in your hands the next time it is made available!
