Ebay is all set to sell ZTE’s soon to be launched Firefox OS powered smartphone later this week in the US. ZTE’s Firefox phone if you are not aware was actually launched in other markets a few weeks ago.
The ZTE Open as the the phone is known, is a mid range handset sporting a 3.5-inch HVGA display. Under the hood of this non assuming device is a Cortex A5 processor which runs at 1GHz. There is just 256 MB of RAM as well as 512 MB of internal storage which for Android is quite inadequate nowadays. But then, this doesn’t run Android! The phone gets a 4GB microSD card too that comes with the package . The imaging bit is handled by a 3.2-megapixel rear camera. The phone gets a bunch of connectivity options including Bluetooth, A-GPS and Wi-Fi. Powering all this is a 1,200mAh battery .
The ZTE Open would be sold as an unlocked unit in the U.S where it would be priced at $79.99. For the same reason, Mozilla has clarified that there would be very less localized content or localized features on the device. They also add that this phone has been specifically targeted at developers and early adopters who would like to see a glimpse of the new OS and its functionalities. On second thoughts, wouldn’t it have been better had Mozilla waited for a real powerhouse of a handset and showcase a superior device and a far superior user experience – if the intention was just to sell a “trial” handset – if we may call the ZTE Open one?
Like I mentioned earlier, the phone is already available across Europe and South America – namely Spain, Poland, Venezuela, and Colombia and sports smartphone like features comparable to Android. The device also has tight social media integration and also runs Nokia’s licensed Here Maps. The web browser as you might guessed is “Firefox” and there is an App Store called the Firefox Marketplace as well.
Anyway, if you happen to be one of those early adopters who would not mind getting your hands dirty with a Firefox OS laden phone, head over to Ebay as soon as this one is launched!
