More details and images have emerged about the forthcoming Xiaomi Mi4 smartphone, with photos seeming to show a metallic finish on the back cover of the device. The new flagship from Xiaomi will be officially launched in Beijing tomorrow afternoon, but thus far we actually seem to have a fairly complete picture of what we expect to be a very impressive follow up to one of my absolute favorites, the Xiaomi Mi3.
At the end of last week we were treated to some pretty delicious details regarding the Mi4 smartphone, and lets just say that it has certainly whet our geeky appetites. The display will use a Quad HD 2560 x 1440 5.5 inch LCD panel, similar in class to what we have seen on the LG G3. If indeed it is of equal caliber to the G3, we will be very, very impressed. The device will also debut the latest processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 805, a quad-core SoC clocked at 2.5GHz which also boasts a more powerful graphics processor in the form of the Adreno 420. Other specs include a 16MP camera, 32GB of storage, a generous 3GB of RAM, microSD support, a 3,200mAh battery and the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS using the latest MIUI V5 interface from Xiaomi.

Today’s images appear to show a either an unibody design similar to what we have seen from HTC at its One series. The rumors we also encouraged by a comment by Xiaomi VP, Li Wangqiang, that was translated to “The journey of a piece of steel metal”. However this initial speculation has been dampened somewhat when Li made a statement that indicated towards the contrary:
“The new product is indeed uses a lot of metal, but not for the purpose of metal back cover.”
Even of the back cover of the device is indeed made of plastic, I think the metallic finish could still be a very attractive finish. The LG G3 has a plastic cover but still manages to offer a very attractive metal-like finish that in no way feels cheap. It would have been very interesting to see uni-body metal chassis design, but either way, the Xiaomi Mi4 looks like a really solid entrant to the top tier flagship segment.
