Let’s talk money! Many of us are losing it during the holidays, but companies are collecting stacks of cash at the same time. Today we are covering financial news on Xiaomi, The Interview and Chromebooks.
Xiaomi now worth $46 billion
It’s no surprise Xiaomi is already a huge smartphone manufacturer, but the company has crossed an important milestone today. The latest fund raising brought in $1.1 billion, making Xiaomi a $46 billion company.
That makes Xiaomi the biggest startup in the world, beating Uber since the latest valuation. There are many factors that make Xiaomi such a successful company – a mixture of great offers, strong social marketing and efficient cost managing.
Opinion: Some say Xiaomi is the “next big thing”, and I definitely won’t disagree. The company has been growing immensely, now beating big players like Sony, Motorola and HTC. It’s actually about to catch up with with LG. Will it reach Samsung and Apple at some point? Only time will tell.
The Interview makes over $15 millions online
Despite terror threats and limited movie availability, The Interview managed to make over a million in theaters just the first day. That is a successful amount considering the movie was only available in a select number of theaters. The kicker is that the movie was also available online, leaving us wondering just how much money came in from the web.
It turns out a lot of users were watching The Interview during the holidays, as the movie has made over $15 million online. The movie has been purchased and rented approximately 2 million times, and the majority of these purchases came from the Google Play Store and YouTube. This film literally became Sony Pictures’ most important online film of all time.
Opinion: Attach a cause to anything and you will get results. Especially if it reaches proportions similar to the issue The Interview caused. It was quite insane, but at least we got to see the last silly movie of the year.
Amazon had an amazing Christmas, and Chromebooks came out on top
Chromebooks have been growing in popularity for a while. Their simple interface, speedy performance and affordable price point make Chrome OS laptops natural winners, and the holiday numbers really show this.
The best-selling laptops during the holidays happen to mostly be Chromebooks. The top 3 include the Samsung Chromebook, ASUS Transformer Book (not Chrome Os) and the Acer Chromebook.
Opinion: Affordable computers are becoming the trend nowadays. Actually, affordable anything is becoming all the hype. Cheaper devices are becoming much more capable and well built nowadays. You no longer need to purchase expensive products to get an acceptable experience.
