What could a guy who makes mainstream pop music know about a product category that no multi-billion dollar technology company have yet to figure out? Turns out quite a bit. I have been waiting for a wearable like this one, since companies have been vying for that oh so personal space on my wrist.
The Puls is a wearable not a watch according to Will.i.am, you put a SIM card in it, no watch has a SIM card and makes phone calls. He spoke of the device as a lifestyle companion. Detail on the specifications were vague, though we did get some solid numbers; it comes with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of Memory a SIM card slot, flexible curved display and a 780mAh battery that is in the band. It comes with standard Smartwatch faire – a pedometer and accelerometer that is powered by an Android-based platform. You can connect it to your phone via WiFi but comes with a 3G option and a few carriers have hopped on board, AT&T in the US and O2 in the UK.
It looks a lot like the Mika, that Intel showed off at the New York Fashion Week; Will.i.am was Intel’s Creative Director back in 2011. It is a little shocking that Will.i.am would not have gone with them, though the processor platform was not specifically named, he did say that “no watch ever ran a Snapdragon processor”. Another indicator that it might be based on a Qualcomm solution is that during the presentation he also said that he “was the only black man to have my own OS”. If there was confirmation, it didn’t happen at the press event.
In terms of features it comes with a bunch of preloaded apps and features, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Clock, Calendar, Maps, Dialer to make phone calls, Email, Text Messaging, Calculator and Contacts. Puls also comes with a Fitness App which was shown off by his personal trainer DB who trains other celebrities. Eventually the app will connect to other puls watches so the trainer and trainee can share data.
Aneeda is actually awesome, not because its unlike every other voice assistant out there. It is awesome because when you address her it sounds like “I-need-a”, get it? The phonetics are intentional and I love them. Past that you can customize your search, Will liked to call his music buckets, not folders or playlists. Apparently Anneda is going to be a little street in her flavor.
The cuff as a wearable is something that I have been waiting for, for quite sometime. The cuff design means you can fit in a bigger battery, plus it has the added benefit of being flexible which makes it even cooler in my geek books. To be honest, the event ran long, like really long, he even had some guy in a cape tell us that this was a fashionable device. A man wearing a cape can’t be wrong.
