Facebook has just implemented a new feature where any video you encounter will automatically start as you scroll down your Facebook newsfeed. Personally I was not too impressed with this behavior and started poking around for a way to turn it off. Turns out, it was actually really simple to do. Let me show you how to turn off automatic video streaming in Facebook.
Over the years, Facebook has certainly become a major part of our lives, but the relationship can at times be a fraught one, where the social media company make decisions that drive you up the wall. Not for the first time, Facebook has simply pulled a new ‘feature’ out the bag and decided that it will now be enabled across the board, by default. Facebook wants to play all the videos that you scroll past in your news-feed, but do you really want to see that animal cruelty video? The Israeli conflict video? Facebook has decided on your behalf to just play ’em all, but I think maybe you may not to live this way. Here’s how you can change it – Note you will have to alter settings for both the PC browser and the mobile app separately.
How to Turn Off Facebook Auto-play Videos – PC/Mac Browser
In your browser, click on the small downward pointing arrow on the top right corner of the Facebook page, then scroll down to ‘settings’. Next click ‘Video’ on the bottom left column and you will see your account’s ‘Auto-play Videos’ settings which has a small box allowing you to choose ‘On’ or ‘Off . Select ‘Off’ and videos will not play until you decide to click them.
Drop Down Menu>Settings>Videos>Off
Turn Off Facebook Auto-play Videos – Mobile App
Don’t forget that (as the image above shows) the auto-play video settings need to done again in the mobile app. In the Facebook mobile app, tap the icon on the top right of the screen (it simply looks like three horizontal lines). This will take you to the ‘Help & Settings’ screen. Next select App Settings. Then tap ‘Video Auto-Play’, you will then be asked to select from ‘On , ‘Off’ or ‘Wi-fi only’ which will restrict video auto playing to times when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, and thus not tripping out your mobile data plan.
