Sprint is negating the need to purchase a Galaxy S5, Amazon is blaming poor Fire Phone sales on price and Seth Rogen may become your next Steve Wozniak. This and more after the break!
Need a phone? You normally have to cash out insane amounts of money for a new phone (or sign a 2-year contract for a more reasonable price), but Sprint is changing that. The Now Network started a leasing program with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, in which you could rent a phone for a monthly fee.
This offer is no longer exclusive to the new iPhones, as Sprint is now allowing you to rent a Samsung Galaxy S5 for $20 a month. This seems like a great deal and should be great for helping you avoid high one-time fees, but there is a sucky part.
The phone is pretty much rented and you still have to keep it for 24 months. You can simply purchase the phone after this, or go ahead and trade it for a new one. Some qualifying Sprint customers will be able to get a $15 credit, though, bringing the monthly payment down to $5. Now that is a deal!
Opinion: I am not a big fan of these programs. At the end, the carrier ends up getting more than the user anyways. The best idea is still to purchase your phones and sell then when you are ready to upgrade. At least in my opinion.
The Amazon Fire Phone is a very unique device, but for many reasons it wasn’t quite a hit in sales. Amazon is attributing this problem to a single mistake – pricing. Amazon Senior Vice President of Devices David Limp has told the press this is really where the company made a mistake.
“We didn’t get the price right. I think people come to expect a great value, and we sort of mismatched expectations. We thought we had it right. But we’re also willing to say we missed. And so we corrected.” -David Limp
Prices went down in September, bringing the base version down to $0.99 from $199.99 on a 2-year contract.
Opinion: Is price really the issue? It’s definitely part of it. The phone doesn’t deserve a high-end price, but Amazon must also realize the Fire Phone is not exactly the best consumer choice. It’s a phone that mostly benefits them. It has cool features for shopping and the 3D capabilities are fun, but that’s about it.
We know Christian Bale will be playing Steve Jobs in the next Steve Jobs movie. In fact, the role has been given to him without much effort. Now it’s time to find out who is playing the other mastermind behind Apple.
The deal is not yet finalized, but it’s said a main candidate is Seth Rogen. It’s said the comedy actor hasn’t received a solid offer yet, but the producers do want him in the cast.
Opinion: Can Seth Rogen make a good Steve Wozniak? I am not quite sure. I don’t recall him ever taking a similar role, which makes him an odd candidate. It feels like he may turn this into a bit of a comedy flick.
