Pebble stands as one of our favorite smartwatches, even after a flood of flashy and feature-full competitors have reached our doorstep. It offers amazing battery life and instant notifications, but it has always been lacking in the health & fitness department.
This changes today as Pebble releases a new update that enables full activity tracking and sleep monitoring to all Pebble devices. This turns the device into a full health & fitness tracker that works in the background, while the watch displays your favorite watch face.
No major update is complete without some partnerships, and Pebble definitely has a set of apps to go with their health & fitness features. Pebble’s new apps come from Misfit, Jawbone, and Swim.com.
The Misfit app for Pebble keeps track of your activity and sleep. Jawbone is joining the party with Up, a new activity-tracking watch face. Meanwhile, Swim.com’s application will keep swimmers informed about their performance, keeping record of distance, pace, times, strokes and efficiency.
All these new apps somehow take advantage of what makes the Pebble such a great smartwatch. With multiple days of battery life, these apps can track your activity with much less interruptions. Not to mention, swimming tracking will really put the device’s water resistance to the test.
Current Pebble users are not the only ones getting good news from Pebble today. The company is also announcing an availability expansion that will put Pebble devices in many wrists.
Aside from the current Best Buy, Target, AT&T stores and Amazon.com availability, Pebble smartwatches can now be purchased from Sam’s Club, Fry’s Electronics and (soon) Sprint stores.
Pebble is also coming to the UK (Dixons, O2 and Amazon.co.uk) in October. And the company is entering new markets in Benelux (MediaMarkt, Coolblue.nl, Wehkamp.nl, Bol.com) and Scandinavia ((MediaMarkt, Teknikmagasinet, Webhallen, Verkkokauppa.com).
To find out more about availability you can always consult Pebble’s website. Prices are still at $99 / €129 / £99 for the regular Pebble and $199 / €229 / £179 for the Pebble Steel.
These prices are also news to us, as they seem to have been officially dropped by $50. We saw Best Buy was selling the Pebble for this lower price, but it’s nice to see this is a permanent change.
Talk about expansion! Pebble is really taking things to the next level here. Like you, though, we are also wondering what could be coming in the future. I am hoping for a second-generation Pebble to come soon!
