OPPO today have just launched their new contender in the 5 inch smartphone space, the OPPO R5. The OPPO R5 claims to be the world’s thinnest smartphone and features a sleek but solid build that makes an immediate impression. It should come to market globally in the next few weeks for a retail price of around $490, which could make it an attractive and affordable alternative to the iPhone 6. Let Mobile Geeks give you quick side by side comparison of the OPPO R5 next to the iconic Apple iPhone 6:
Both of these devices are impressive when it comes to the actual build quality and design of the housing used with plenty of aluminum coming in to play. The iPhone 6 Plus may have had its issues with bending, but in reality we know this guy to be solid in the hand with beautifully crafted round edges that just ooze class. The OPPO R5 however has plenty to boast about when it comes to the overall build of the device being in fact the world’s thinnest smartphone at a remarkable 4.85mm. This is more than a full 2mm thinner than the iPhone 6 which seems almost a tad bloated compared to the OPPO.
Watch the two devices side by side in this comparison video we shot at the Oppo R5 launch event in Singapore:
There are of course a plethora of other differences to consider however when comparing these two devices, not least the fact that one runs iOS and the other Android. But if we just stay with hardware for the moment we can see that the OPPO R5 kind of sits somewhere between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus with its 5.2 inch screen. Talking of screens, the OPPO R5 actually punches above its weight with a very attractive AMOLED panel that comes in at 1920 x 1080 resolution – standard Full HD. The iPhone 6 however has a less common resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels using the company’s proprietary Retina LCD technology. Both devices look stunning but, on current evidence the OPPO device is actually doing very well, especially in the area of brightness as you can clearly see in the video above.
There are differences in terms of main cameras (16MP vs 8MP), processors used, battery life and pretty much all aspects of these two devices. What is clear to us however is that OPPO have worked hard to compete with top tier brands like Apple and have developed the R5 to be a very competitive contender in an increasingly competitive market. When you factor in a price difference of possibly a few hundred dollars, OPPO might just have a winner.
