Samsung has leaked its very own Galaxy S5 Dx, but that isn’t the most shocking headline today. ARM is aiming to bring $20 smartphones to the market and a girl implanted an NFC chip into her own hand!
Samsung’s UK website seems to have accidentally listed a Samsung Galaxy S5 Dx. This smartphone is alleged to be the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, which has been recently leaked. As you can see in the image above, it should come in various colors an a design nearly-identical to the Galaxy S5.
Details continue to be anyone’s guess, but expect this to be a lower-end version of its bigger brother. It’s likely made with affordability in mind and should come with a more accessible price tag.
Opinion: If one is not going to spend the big bucks on a high-end device, why go for a Mini? You can be sure this smartphone will probably cost more than the OnePlus One, the Moto G or a Xiaomi Redmi Note. And it probably won’t offer more.
This year will probably be remembered for smartphone affordability. We have had great low-priced devices in the past, but never coming from so many manufacturers. If ARM’s plans are to pan out, things will get even better before the end of the year.
ARM announced they are targeting for $20-priced smartphones in the next few months. These will not be your super phones, of course. Such devices will be made for emerging markets, and will be much more limited than the usual smartphone.
Opinion: As a chip designer, ARM has the power to make such things happen. The processor is one of the most expensive parts in a smartphone, after all. Will we see these phones in the USA? I doubt it, but it will be great for emerging markets.
Zoe Quinn is a game designer and wants to take her work to the next level… so she has implanted an NFC chip into her own hand! She is no doctor or surgeon, but does have experience in piercing and got very adventurous.
She has been playing with it for a few days and has been programming her chip to do a variety things. Her latest test allows NFC users to download Deus Ex from Humble Bundle when you tap a smartphone to her hand.
Zoe does plan to integrate this to a game she is making. She is also getting an arduino controller that works with it. In fewer words: she is experimenting.
Opinion: I can honestly say I am shocked by this. It’s admirable to see Zoe going this far to experiment with new technology. Talk about believing in NFC! She has her passion… and very large balls. Props to you!
