Yesterday we talked about the past, present and future of MediaTek, a Chinese processor manufacturer that is on the rise. We expect their chips to compete against mobile giants like Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Samsung, but first they must score some major devices.
The first high-end smartphone touting a MediaTek SoC was the newly announced HTC One M9+, and now we are finding out “China’s Apple” may be adopting MediaTek’s top-tier chips for their upcoming Xiaomi Redmi series smartphone. This is certainly good news, becasue though they are still losing to Apple, Xiaomi is a huge selling power.
The news comes from popular leakster @UpLeaks. The Twitter personality unveiled some information about a said Xiaomi H3Y, which is believed to be the next generation in the Redmi line-up. Let’s jump into the specs before getting to the nitty gritty.
- Android 5.0 or 5.1
- FHD display（Display size unknown）
- Octa-core MediaTek MT6795 64-Bit processor
- 2 GB of RAM
- 13 MP rear-facing camera（Samsung S5K3M2 ISOCELL）
- 5 MP front-facing（OmniVision OV5670）
- Dual-SIM support
- Metalic Design
These are some good specs for a Redmi smartphone. This device series is known for offering affordable smartphones, not powerful ones. This guy looks to be breaking the norm with some powerful components. Of course, the most important part is the processor.
This device is said to sport a powerful MediaTek Helio X10. If that rings a bell, it’s because it’s the same MT6795 chip found on the HTC One M9+. And it’s especially surprising because Xiaomi is known for sticking with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 series processors for its lower-end devices.
This change could mean a couple things for consumers. Either the phone will cost about the same as previous versions and be much more powerful, or it may even be cheaper and still offer more efficiency. We ran an AnTuTu benchmark on the HTC One M9+; it scored about the same as the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5!
Things are looking up for MediaTek and their entrance to the higher-end market, guys. You can’t really ask for more when you have companies like HTC and Xiaomi backing you up. And MediaTek is not stopping there; we must keep in mind that powerful Helio X20 chip the company just announced.
Regardless, this is looking to be a good phone for the affordable market. More power and less cash – sounds like a sweet deal!
