Imagine entering an empty room and turning it into the best entertainment area in the building. Or going into your empty office, putting on a headset and see your environment fill up with all your latest projects. That is the digital picture Windows is painting with the announcement of the HoloLens, a holographic headset that offers augmented reality for all.
It seems to merge your digital and real worlds together – it’s really quite stunning. Of course, the project is not advanced enough to take over the world as the commercial portrays it, but it will enable possibilities that not so long ago seemed like faraway science fiction concept.
Microsoft didn’t show us the whole concept, but they gave us a good look at what the device can do. Microsoft demoed the device live and showed us how it can bring a person to life by playing a holographic video. In addition, we were able to see how a digital quad copter hologram was created and then 3D-printed.
The headset is pretty much a whole computer on its own. It needs no connection to other devices and can handle all this work with its integrated CPU, GPU and everything else a computer of this kind needs.
While we got no specific launch date, Microsoft did promise a launch within the Windows 10 time frame. So far all we know is that Windows 10 will be released “later in the year”, so we will simply have to wait and see.
As it goes with any new product, Microsoft can’t do this alone. The company is inviting developers to create content for HoloLens. They also announced Windows Holographic, an API that will help developers create their own content for the head-mounted device.
More is to come during Microsoft’s yearly Build Developer Conference. You will want to be there!
Do you guys realize what HoloLens could represent? This thing is the next step in computing. It could literally replace all your devices if it takes off. Of course, we have to see if it takes off first. Microsoft is a huge company and I believe they could take this far with enough effort. And they seem to be very well-invested in the project.
What do you think of this futuristic device? WIll you be getting yourself one? And if so, how much are you willing to pay for it?
