New devices from Meizu and Huawei have been announced today. Meanwhile, Kodak planning to test the smartphone waters with photography-focused devices.
Meizu has announced yet another affordable device with remarkable specs (considering the price). Enter the Meizu M1 Note, a device that will stay stylish, with a wide array of available colors. In addition, it will take care of work very well.
The phone is powered by a 1.6 GHz MediaTek octo-core MT6752 processor, 2 GB of RAM and Android 4.4.4 KitKat. In addition, you get 13MP/5MP cameras, a 3140 mAh battery and a 5.5-inch 1080p display. All for the price of 999 RMB (about $160) for the 16 GB version or 1199 RMB (about $190) for the 32 GB iteration.
Opinion: That is really a stunning price for such a device, but that is to be expected from Meizu. By the way, did you notice it looks an awful lot like the iPhone 5c?
Meizu is not the only Chinese manufacturer making headlines today. Huawei has also announced the Ascend GX1, another device with an affordable price and mid-end specs. This one is a bit pricier at 1590 CNY (about $255) in China.
Specs include a 6-inch 720p display, a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, 8MP/2MP cameras and a 3500 mAh battery.
Opinion: Not too shabby, but definitely not a deal like Meizu’s. Huawei may be a king of affordability in America, but its fellow Chinese manufacturers definitely leave it in the dust.
Photography companies haven’t been the best at adopting today’s new technologies, but Kodak is set on giving this growing market a try. The company has announced that it has teamed up with Bullitt Group to release its own line of mobile devices in 2015. The first will be coming to CES, in January.
Not much is known, but there will be a high focus in photography (of course). In addition, the company aims to make devices that offer “a high-end experience” without the complications of advanced devices. Oh, and they are readying some remote assistance software to come with packed with it.
Opinion: Let’s see what Kodak can come up with. To be completely honest here, I am not keeping my hopes too high. Let’s see if they can change my mind.
