Apple’s new MacBook probably already became the most popular Intel Core M-bearing laptop in the world. It is one awesome-lookinlaptop, but it’s not entering the market alone. In fact, there is a good list of super thin, fan-less laptops in the market.
My favorite contender for the new MacBook happens to be the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. This laptop comes with similar specs and actually carries a similarly over-priced price tag, so it was an obvious computer to compare it to.
Without further ado, let’s jump into the details and put these bad boys face to face in a deadly match to find out which one is the best buy.

Which has the best display?
Apple’s new MacBook comes with the world-famous Retina Display, which is pretty much another word for having a super high-definition screen. Those of us who have been keeping an eye on Apple know this is just an over-hyped term, though. The panel comes with a 2304x1440p definition.
This is not to say that is a bad specs, as that actually offers a great pixel density for a 12-inch screen, but it doesn’t really beat others in the market, including the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, which features a stunning 3200x1800p resolution display.
I have used the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro and can say the display has great color reproduction, brightness and viewing angles. And since the resolution is actually higher than that of the MacBook, I will have to give this battle to the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro.
By the way, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro happens to carry a touchscreen, which may be a huge incentive for some of you.
Performance & software
These laptops happen to come with nearly identical hardware. They both sport an Intel Core M processor, an Intel HD Graphics 5300 GPU and 8 GB of RAM. This means performance will be nearly the same, which leaves the main differences in software, which makes it really hard to choose a winner.
Whether Mac OS X or Windows 8.1 is the winner is a very subjective topic. It really all depends on what you will be doing with the computer, and how you prefer to use it. Mac OS X is known for being clean, sleek and much simpler to use. You are also tied to Apple’s ecosystem, which means the laptop will work better with the Cupertino giant’s software and other devices.
On the other hand, Windows is known for its more complex user interface, as well as program support to throw around. As much as some of you may love Mac OS X, we can’t deny the computing world continues to revolve around Windows, for the most part.
In other cases you may be able to argue Windows computers are better for gaming, but that argument is kind of moot here. This is because the Intel Core M and HD Graphics 5300 do not offer enough power to really take advantage of Windows’ gaming prowess. I suppose you could play The Sims or something.
Now, this is where things get good, as this is the department in which these laptops are most different. If you are choosing between the MacBook and the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, chances are most of your betting chips will be placed on the design elements each one of them offer.
Apple has captured the world’s heart with its good-looking devices, and we can’t deny the new MacBook looks gorgeous. It takes design elements from the new iPads and iPhones, making the computer much flatter and elegant. It also comes in gold, gray or silver, which could help you match your Apple mobile devices. And measuring in at only 13.1 mm, the new MacBook is stunningly thing, as well as beautiful.
I will have to say I am more a fan of how the MacBook looks, but if it comes down to functionality, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro has the upper hand. This is because this device carries the same convertible form factor that Lenovo’s Yoga line has made popular. You can flip the display all the way around to turn your device into a tablet, or you could use it in Tent or Stand mode. It’s a very versatile machine, as well as looking pretty darn good. And really, it’s just as thin as the MacBook (at its thickest).
This is also a huge section to consider, as these laptops’ battery life performance is very different. Apple’s MacBook actually has an outstanding all-day battery life that can give you 9 hours of straight web browsing.
Meanwhile, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro happens to stay behind, offering only up to 7.2 hours of battery life (and that would be stretching it).
Pricing & final thoughts
So this is what your final decision will probably rely on the most – cash money. Apple’s new MacBook happens to be a bit pricier at $1299, while the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro currently sells for $1199. This would be at their lowest configurations.
So, which one is better? If I had to give you a final answer, I would say opt for the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, as it has a better screen, it’s nearly as thin and light, has a very cool design with freedom to use the laptop as you wish, has equal performance and offers all the freedoms of Windows. Plus, you would save yourself $100.
The answer is never that simple, though, as I could see why some of you would prefer the new MacBook. For $100 more you get much better battery life, Mac OS X and a better looking design (even if not as functional). Not to mention, Apple products tend to depreciate in value much slower, so chances of you selling the laptop later for a higher price are almost guaranteed.
It depends on what you value. I would probably pick the MacBook instead of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. But that is if I absolutely had to pick between these two, which are both over-priced. We have also compared the new MacBook to the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Samsung Ativ Book 9. Some of those are easily better options, the MacBook Air is significantly cheaper.
