Piper Jaffray, the analytics firm is known for doing this twice yearly survey on teenagers in the US. The survey in its entirety might not appeal to hardcore gadget fans like us because they usually include stuff like the teens’ favourite restaurants, hang out places, favorite clothing brands amongst other things. BUT, they also include buts like what kind of smartphone and gadgets they like to own – or already own. This is obviously of great interest to us newsmongers. So here’s what teenagers in the U.S are currently gung ho about when it comes to gadgets.
The survey reveals that a vast majority (How does 91% sound?) of them plan to purchase a smartphone as their next handset. This is an increase of 86 percent from what the figure was last year! Only the rest 9 per cent would remain content with a non-smartphone. Even more interesting is the next bit. Over 59% amongst these 91% of teens intend to get themselves an iPhone! Only 21 percent of them intend to get themselves an Android device. Another noticeable trend was that kids from high income families preferred using an iPhone.
Another interesting tidbit? Almost 48 percent of all surveyed teens ALREADY own an iPhone. This figure was 40 percent during last fall. Android is obviously the next best choice for teens and the figures for Android devices have increased by just 1 percentage point since the last survey.
As for tablets, the iPad still rules the roost here with 68 percent of the teens owning an iPad. This is however down from last year’s 72 percent. The sample size for the survey was 1600 teens belonging to high income families and 3600 teens from average income families.
