Have you heard what they’re saying about the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini?! Of course you have, it’s everywhere! You simply can’t avoid it unless you’re living in a self-imposed media blackout. The rumors run the gamut from ridiculous, to plausible, to simply banal. If you’ve stopped reading them, I can’t blame you. But when you put all the rumors together, you start to get an interesting picture. So here is the rumor round up of the two most talked about gadgets.
iPhone 5 Rumor Mill
The design of the new iPhone has been the subject of much conversation. Some say the smartphone will be 4 inches, others say that’s just wishful thinking. It seems likely that the iPhone 5 will be slimmer – some reports put the thickness as low as 7.5 millimeters. A new magnetic dock connector also seems very plausible.
There have also been reports of micro jack connection parts, an iPhone casing without a home button, a camera in the corner and different color cases. It’s been all over the place. We all know that Apple tends to stick close to its designs, so some of the more radical things can make you roll your eyes.
In terms of specs, we know for certain that the iPhone 5 will come with iOS 6 and all it’s updates. Google Maps will certainly be absent and Apple’s solution in its place. We expect to see a faster quad core A6 processor and increased 4G speed. The iPhone 5 may also have NFC technology, improved battery and a nano SIM.
The release date has also been debated to death. July 30th? August 7th? October 4th? September 21st? (Ding Ding Ding!) (Maybe).
iPad Mini Rumor Mill
After Steve Job’s pronouncement that 7 inch tablets were “dead on arrival”, rumors of a 7 inch iPad Mini sounded shocking and very appealing. Once the rumors started, there was really no stopping them. Let’s start with design.
Most reports set the size of the Mini at 7.85 inches and generous sources have placed the pixel resolution of 2048 × 1536 and a pixel density of 326 ppi. More realistic resolution estimates chimed in at 1024 x 768. Many also believe that the iPad Mini will be even thinner than the iPad. A recent report from Gotta Be Mobile states that a back facing camera and the smaller dock connector are in the works for the Mini.
We really know next to nothing about hardware. Guesses on memory have been at 8 GB or more, but no one really knows.
The price of the iPad Mini is assumed to be between $250 and $200 in order to compete with the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire. Survey says that most people will buy an iPhone 5 and that an iPad Mini is redundant.
The Mini’s release date is also up for grabs. Will it launch with the iPhone 5 on September 21st? Or will it have it’s own launch? Many people seem to think so.
These are the rumors as they stand. All of this remains unknown until Apple makes its grand announcement.
