Popular image sharing app Instagram has announced the debut of a brand new feature dubbed “Photos Of You”. This feature in its simplest form will let Instagram users tag their friends (or businesses) in photos edited and posted using the App.
Announcing the new feature in a blog post, Instagram says; “We have always sought to give you simple and expressive ways to bring the stories behind your photos to life. Your captions and hashtags capture the ‘what?’ and your Photo Map answers the ‘where?’ but until today we’ve never quite been able to answer the ‘who?”.
If you thought the tagging feature on Instagram is similar to what you have seen on Facebook, let me inform you that only the owner of the photo can tag their friends in pictures taken and uploaded by them. This is unlike Facebook which allows users to tag photos that have been uploaded by others. Instagram claims that because of this secure tagging feature, the user has a greater control over the images they share. Another thing to be noted is the fact that the tag that would show up on Instagram would NOT depict the real name – rather, the account name that they are using would be displayed.
To start using Instagram with this latest feature update, head to the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store depending on what phones you own and update to the latest version of Instagram. Once updated, you will notice that the application now gets a hitherto unseen “Photos of You” section on your profile. You will now also get notifications for tags. Since this is a new feature, users will only get to see their own “Photos of You” section. You would not be able to view the same for other accounts as it would remain hidden. This is to ensure that people get used to the App and can tweak it to reveal and edit whatever images would be loaded to that section.
