Mobile World Congress is usually predictable, so we didn’t expect HTC and Valve to announce their collaboration on a VR headset. Re Vive, as it’s called, is shipping later in 2015 but we got a chance to go behind closed doors and take it for a spin.
The verdict? Re Vive blew our minds. It’s hard to put into words — Nicole and I both tried it and agree that it’s the best VR headset we’re ever experienced. Since you really have to see it for yourself to understand how immersive it is, Nicole and I will be sharing notes about Re Vive live on the Techlounge video stream tomorrow — stay tuned for the details. Update: Here’s the video.
In the meantime, here’s what you need to know. HTC approached Valve last summer to collaborate on a VR headset and Re Vive was born. HTC benefits from Valve’s expertise with video games and virtual reality (the SteamVR platform); Valve benefits form HTC’s experience designing and building world-class consumer electronics.
The Re Vive’s specs are impressive, with two 1200×1080 displays with a 90Hz refresh rate, multiple laser sensors, a pair of cameras, a gyro, an accelerometer, and a headphone jack for your favorite headphones. A motion tracking base station and a pair of wireless “VR controllers” complete the package — you supply the PC. Here’s a picture gallery of the Re Vive VR headset.
