We are at MWC 2015 getting our hands all over the latest devices. Among them is the HTC One M9, the Taiwanese manufacturer’s latest flagship. We know a lot of you currently own the Samsung Galaxy S5 and are wondering what you should upgrade to. If you have been considering the HTC One M9, we have a comparison for you.

We haven’t spent enough time with the HTC One M9 to give you a full on comparison, but we have put together a quick and dirty one to hold you over until the complete comparison comes around. Let’s jump into the main details!

HTC One M9 specs

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • 5-inch 1080p display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • 32 GB of internal storage
  • 20 MP rear-facing camera
  • UltraPixel front-facing camera
  • 2840 mAh battery
  • 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.61 mm
  • 157 grams

Samsung Galaxy S5 specs

  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat
  • 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 16/32 GB of internal storage
  • 16 MP rear-facing camera
  • 2 MP front-facing camera
  • 2800 mAh battery
  • 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm
  • 145 grams

Performance

There are some obvious differences here. For starters, the HTC One M9 should offer a pretty good upgrade in performance, but is it enough to make you switch over? It depends on how much you value power. After all, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and its Snapdragon 801 processor already offer ample power. To be honest, you won’t notice a huge improvement with most tasks and applications.

Software

Samsung’s UI is obviously heavy, as well as annoying to many users. At the same time, it’s known for being very feature-full. On the other hand, HTC uses a much simpler UI, which also means you will have to give up some of the functionality.

Display

The displays are very similar, with almost equal sizes and the same definition, but they use different types of screen panels. The Samsung Galaxy S5 uses their popular Super AMOLED display, which offers much more saturated colors and deeper blacks. This looks really good, but if you like “true to life” colors, you may want to go with something like the HTC One M9.

Design and build quality

In terms of design, it will be much easier to find a winner. The Samsung Galaxy S5 (like most Samsung phones) has a cheaper plastic construction that most of us don’t happen to like. Look at the HTC One M9 and you will see a much better design and construction. The One M9 is made mostly of metal, and it sports a solid construction that the HTC One line-up is now famous for.

Camera

We can’t say much about camera quality yet, but keep in mind the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a previous generation smartphone. The HTC One M9 has just been announced, which likely means its camera will be better. We will test the HTC One M9 camera to its fullest when we get a review unit. For now, we won’t pass judgement on this section yet.

Which one do you think is better?

Of course, there is no solid answer as to which one is better. It’s all about what you need and value as a user, but the HTC One M9 should be a great upgrade for any Samsung Galaxy S6 user. That is, if you happen to need an upgrade.

The HTC One M9 has improved performance and a better build quality, that is for sure. But there are things about the Samsung Galaxy S5 you may love. Enjoy the video and let us know what you think in the comments below!
