The HTC Desire series is known for offering some great mid-end and affordable devices, but it seems that is changing with the latest announcement. The HTC Desire Eye has enough power and features to compete with he top dogs.

We are live at the New York City event and got to experience the Desire Eye first-hand. It’s a great phone and we know many of you will be loving it, so let’s jump straight into the details.

HTC Desire Eye specs

  • 5.2-inch 1080p display
  • 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 13 MP rear-facing camera
  • 13 MP front-facing camera
  • 2400 mAh battery

Performance

If these specs show anything it is that the HTC Desire is no regular smartphone. It is powerful and it’s fit to go up against any of the high-end devices. It’s very snappy and works just as expected.

There’s more to power and raw specs to this device, though. As its name entails, it has a high focus on the camera department. This is where the HTC DEsire Eye really stands out from the crowd.

Great camera and amazing selfies

The rear-facing camera may seem like your average 13 MP shooter, but it’s the software that makes it special. HTC is implementing its new Eye Experience camera software, which is quite unique.

The HTC Eye Experience tracks your face and keeps you perfectly framed at all times. This is done by cropping the image, and it can even be done with multiple people in the same room (cropped images would all be displayed in the screen).

This new experience also has a whole set of features, including screen sharing, split capture, Face Fusion, Live Makeup, Crop Me In, Voice Selfie and more. Talking about selfies, that is also where this phone shines.

HTC is crowning itself as the selfie king with the Desire Eye, and rightfully so. The device sports a powerful 13 MP front-facing camera that will make your selfies look as good as if they were taken with the back camera.

Design and build quality

The HTC Desire Eye is gorgeous. It’s colorful accent and sleek look make it a very aesthetically-pleasing and unique device. This could be good or bad, depending on your preferences. Some users prefer the more classic “elegant look” the flagship devices offer. This phone offers a more playful design.

Where you will see the biggest difference between the HTC Desire Eye and comparable smartphones is in build quality. While other manufacturers use metals, glass and other high-end materials, the HTC Desire Eye sticks to plastic.

While the device is not badly built, you can certainly tell the difference when holding it. This construction will probably make it less expensive, though. That’s definitely not a bad thing.

Availability and final thoughts

Want to sign up for the best selfie phone out there? The HTC Desire Eye’s launch is scheduled for October (this month). It will first be launched by mobile operators and retailers across EMEA, Asia and the USA.

There’s no mention of pricing yet, but we can’t expect it to be cheap. This is a powerful phone with great features, unlike past Desire smartphones. Camera and selfie lovers will love it, and performance will be on par with some of the best smartphones out there.
