Google announces Android One, a turn-key solution aimed to enable OEMs to create more devices for the next Billion. Android is the most important platform for emerging markets, so it should come as no surprise that Google today announced a new program for those markets called Android One. They are aiming at reaching more consumers with Smartphones, while on stage at Google IO Sundar Pichai pointed that that India has 10% smartphone pentration and Gooel was looking to change that, Android One being a key part of that strategy.
Reference designs are being provided that OEMs can use to come to market quickly with low-cost devices. Google is debuting Android One hardware with Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice in India later this year and cost under $100. Google also, promised automatic updates, which should result in a faster update cycle than users are accustomed to.
Google showed off some hardware to go along with this new platform, we’re seeing support for dual SIM cards, an SD card, a 4.5″ screen, and FM radio.
