The Gionee Elife S5.1 is the latest Android smartphone from Chinese manufacturer Gionee. The actual model name is a reference to the incredible 5.1mm thickness of the device, which is in many ways the follow up to the 5.5mm Elife S5.5 that we reviewed a few months ago. Today we were greeted with news that the Elife S5.1 has in fact been entered in the Guinness Book of Records, as the official thinnest smartphone ever created. Kudos to you Gionee.
If we look around the current crop of Android smartphones we see plenty of thin devices; the current best selling flagship is the Samsung Galaxy S5 which is 8.1mm thin. The new Apple iPhone is an impressive 6.9mm, but the lesser known Oppo Find is even thinner at 6.7mm. The Elife S5.5 took thinness to whole new levels, and certainly impressed us in our S5.5 review with its sleek, slab-like build quality and design.
The new king of thin, the S5.1, is a mid-range 4.7 inch device that takes thinness to new levels. Compared to pretty much ever other product on the market, 5.1mm is totally nuts. We initially had reservations about whether or not 5.5mm was actually thin. We soon got over such misgivings as the S5.5 sported really great build quality, but the question remains – how thin can get before we start to actually feel fragile? Guess we will have to wait until we get hold of the S5.1 to answer that question.
With Gionee focusing predominantly on the Chinese market, it’s no surprise to see the Elife S5.1 debut over there on the Mainland with a target retail price of $325. Gionee also has been developing a strong presence in the Indian market as of Q1 of this year, and will launch the S5.1 on the sub-continent in early November of this year. Other specs (aside from its incredible thinness) include a 4.8 inch 720p LCD screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (no microSD support) plus 8MP and 5MP rear and front facing cameras. The device will run the custom Amigo 2.0 UI from Gionee which is currently based on Android 4.3.

Gionee Smartphones India Head, Arvind Vohra has been quoted as saying, “We are excited to have made it to the Guinness World Records for the world’s thinnest smartphone category. The Gionee Elife S5.1 has been launched in China and will be available in India by early November.“
