Imagine a sheet of glass so thin it can bend and flex like fabric. Corning Taiwan is working in conjunction with the Industrial Technology Institute to produce Willow Glass. Corning showed off Willow Glass displays at the Touch Taiwan 2012 event.
Willow Glass is 50 to 200 micrometers thin and can be produced in a 300 meter roll. Th ultra thin, ultra flexible glass can handle temperatures as high as 450 degrees Celcius, which would destroy polymer films. Such resistance to heat is vital to the creation of high end displays and people are getting excited about Willow Glass’ possibilities.
Solar powered devices, electronic paper and makers of OLED displays are taking notice of the new technology. With any luck we’ll start seeing Willow Glass used in new applications, perhaps even changing our devices.
