Christmas is approaching and you are probably still figuring out what to get dad. After all, choosing gifts for parents can often be the hardest. There’s a plethora of great gadgets you can get your father this holiday season, regardless of whether you want to condone his geeky addiction or make his life easier with good technology.
In this post we aim to give you some great ideas, just in case you are stuck. Let’s jump right into it!
Is your father an avid reader? You way want to get him a good Kindle eBook reader. I find the Kindle Paperwhite to be among my favorite, considering both functionality and pricing. The device offers great battery life (weeks on a single charge), integrated lighting for reading in the dark, and the E-ink performance we have all grown to love.
In addition, the Kindle Paperwhite costs only $119. Amazon is currently holding a nice holiday special, though, offering the device for only $99. Not bad!
Whether your dad is a geek or has no clue about technology, he will find the Chromecast fun and easy to use. This handy HDMI dongle is super affordable and deems any smart TV platform unnecessary. Simply find your content and cast it to your TV. It’s that simple.
Logitech Harmony 650 remote control
There is nothing more annoying than a cluttered entertainment system, especially for parents. This is why one of my favorite gifts has long been the Logitech Harmony 650 remote control.
This is no simple universal remote control. It’s one of the smartest remotes around, with support to up to 8 separate devices. This includes sound systems, Bluray players, Cable boxes, TVs and more.
You can even use buttons like “Watch a DVD”, which would turn on all the necessary devices to achieve this task. You can set it up as you wish.
Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard
Nobody likes dealing with batteries or cables. That is a given, but we often do because we can’t find better solutions out there. What if I told you you could have a wireless keyboard that never needs battery replacements? It exists, guys!
Logitech makes a solar keyboard, named the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750. It uses a wireless USB dongle that connects to your computer and runs of solar energy. And because keyboards use very little energy, the keyboard will stay alive for up to 3 months on a full charge, in total darkness.
Oh, and there are versions for both Mac and Windows.
The regular Pebble may be fine for the youngsters, but a techie father can’t exactly get away with sporting a colorful smart watch to his business or reunions. You need something that looks a bit more serious, but continues to offer great functionality.
Get your dad a Pebble Steel! It’s a no hassles experience, works with multiple platforms, has a great battery life and looks much like a traditional watch.
iPad Mini 3
There is a plethora of tablets out there, but the iPad Mini 3 will likely be the best for dad. It’s very simple, so it will be a great fit for the tech-shy. It’s also very capable, which makes it a perfect fit for the tech-savvy.
I also happen to prefer the smaller size, which makes the tablet much more comfortable and pocketable.
OK, so this is more of a gift for the whole family (or whoever lives at your parents’ house), but any geeky parent will be excited to see the Nest thermostat under their Christmas tree.
This smart thermostat allows you to control your temperature from your smartphone. And because it is “smart” it is also said to save you money on your electricity bill, essentially paying for itself int he long run.
Belkin WeMo Switch
While we are on the topic of smart home devices, why not add in the Belkin WeMo switch? This device’s concept is very simple. You can turn appliances on and off with it… through your smartphone, from wherever you may be. Now, that’s cool!
It’s price has also gone down significantly.
LaCie Rugged 500 GB Mini Disk Portable Hard Drive
I have always said it: information is the most valuable thing you can have. When it comes to your files, you need to have a way to protect them against anything. LaCie’s rugged external hard drives have become the most popular of their kind.
This hard drive is shock, rain and pressure resistant. I have been using one for years and have never had any troubles with it. It’s also relatively affordable at $79. Go get it!
If you have an active dad (or simply a dad who wants a good small camera/video recorder), he will love the GoPro HERO. This is one of GoPro’s newest cameras, and it happens to be available at a very accessible price. It’s only $130!
This price will get you a camera capable of 1080p video recording and 5 MP still photos. It’s also waterproof to up to 131 feet and plays well with all GoPro mounts.
