There is a plethora of messaging apps out there, but which are the best options? This is an important matter, as smartphones’ main function is communication. We use them to stay in touch with the world and those that surround us. We have put together a list of the best and most popular messaging apps. Want to stay in touch efficiently? Keep reading!
Facebook Messenger (FREE)
This may not be everyone’s favorite, but it is probably the most used messaging service in existence. Facebook is such a popular social network that its messaging app has become the go-to service for instant communication. Every one has Facebook!
If you want to find a messaging app that everyone else is using, Facebook Messenger is your best bet. It’s also in every platform worth naming. And if you happen to use Android, you can even take advantage of Chat Heads, which make it amazingly simple to message your friends and family while doing other things with your phone.

WhatsApp ($0.99 per year, first year free)
If I had to guess which messaging app is the most popular in the world, WhatsApp would be one of my top three guesses. WhatsApp grew to giant proportions when mobile instant messaging was still growing. It literally replaced text messaging for many, but it didn’t come with the silly text messaging fees.
You didn’t need usernames or weird PIN numbers, only your smartphone’s contact list. If you had someone’s phone number in your contacts, you could message him/her with WhatsApp. That simple. The app also offered unique features, the most popular being the ability to know when a message was successfully sent and delivered (the checkmarks).
It’s also available in every major platform, offering instant messaging without limitations or compromises.

Hangouts and iMessage (FREE)
These are not really the best instant messaging apps out there, but they come pre-installed in the two most popular smartphone operating systems in the world – Android and iOS. Not to say that these are not capable options, they actually offer a good experience.
The problem is, not many people use Hangouts, and iMessage is exclusive to iOS. These limitations take some of the apps’ glory. You may not like the idea of downloading extra messaging apps when you already have some pre-installed, and that is the only reason why I added them to the list.
Plus, they are already there! Try them. You may very well end up loving them. Oh, and you can try BBM too, which is also multi-platform now.

While Skype is not the best mobile app,it is very popular and full-featured. The app does it all, from simple messages to group video calls. Its apps are known to be battery and resource hogs, though.

Hello SMS (FREE)
I know I only listed internet messaging apps above. I believe traditional text messaging is starting to become a thing of the past, but if you MUST use SMS I would advice that you use Hello SMS.
I fell in love with this text messaging app’s design. Hello SMS is simple, clean, good-looking and free! Sadly, it’s only available for Android right now.
