Musicians tend to spend a lot of time and money on their art, and they can focus so much on it that they forget smartphones and tablets can do wonders for them. Handy iPhones and iPads can expand your creativity and save you from having to get expensive accessories.
There’s a plethora of great apps for musicians out there, but how do you figure which are the best? Search no further; I have put together a neat list of my very favorite musician apps for iOS devices. Let’s take a look at them and see which ones you need to download.
I have been using GuitarToolkit for years and it hasn’t gotten even a bit old. The application is just as useful and handy as the first day I downloaded it. I would say this really is a must-have.
This application offers a tuner, scale chart, metronome and chord guide for a plethora of string instruments. This includes multiple types of guitars and basses, and it even comes with support for more rare instruments like the ukulele, banjo and mandolin.
The best part is that the app is not even limited to the instruments in the list, you can literally add custom instruments with the GuitarToolkit+, which you can upgrade to for $2.99. That would be on top of the $9.99 GuitarToolkit costs. Not a cheap app, but oh so worth it.
Tempo – Metronome with Setlists
The metronome in Guitar Toolkit is great, but maybe you are looking for something more advanced (or simply don’t need all the other features). Tempo is very well-known among musicians. It is actually considered to be fit for professionals, and it is the best-selling metronome app since 2009. That says a lot about the app.
The application comes suited with 35 different time signatures, including compound and complex meters. It also gives you total control over your experience, allowing you to customize accents or turn off beats. It’s also only $1.99.
Songsterr Tabs & Chords
Looking for some good tablatures and chords? Let me introduce you to the acclaimed Songsterr app. This app offers about 500,000 tabs and chords from many popular musicians. And no, it’s not only for guitar players. You will also find tabs for bass and drums, giving you a full experience.
The app is very simple and useful. You can simply start playing songs by accessing your tabs, which also happen to come with sound. You caneven slow the song down to half its normal speed for those difficult sections. And the cherry on top? It’s completely free!
So you got your instruments all ready and want to get working on maybe recording some songs. Garage Band is easily the most popular tool for recording and editing your music.
As it goes with most Apple applications, this is also a very intuitive and easy app to use. It also comes with aid for adding virtual instruments and MIDI controllers, which should make your music sound that much better. Garage Band is also pretty cheap at $4.99, so at least check it out.
Now, if you are a bit more advanced, it’s likely Garage Band just won’t cut it. Enter Music Studio, a much more complex tool that offers everything Apple’s alternative does, and more.
Of course, you can add your sounds, include multiple instruments and the like. But what makes this better? You can do things like edit tracks, add effects, draw in extra notes and download new sounds from a vast library of instruments.
Vocal Warm Up
Do we have any vocalists around? Us instrument players can often forget that vocalists need some tools and help too. Why don’t you check out this neat app. Vocal Warm Up aids you in warming up, exercise or cool down your voice.
Using this app on a regular basis will help you improve your tone, breathing and stamina (your voice’s holy trilogy). Yo can even create your own sessions. And at $3.99, this could be the best investment for keeping your voice healthy and strong.
DM1 – The Drum Machine
Investing in drums and drummers can be a bit expensive and complicated, which is why drum machines are so popular among casual users and starting musicians. The DM1 app offers one of the best iOS drum machines available. It is designed to look like a vintage drum machine, yet offers all the features you will need.
It offers all types of drum pads, mixers and more. It is designed to be simple and clean, allowing you to jump into the fun without much of a learning curve. It’s definitely not the same as a real drum machine (or drums) in terms of tactile feedback, but it can be an awesome tool for affordability and convenience.
Amplifiers can be expensive, and then you need to add in all the pedals and accessories. Can’t invest too much in all that? No need to worry, AmpKit has you covered. You can simply plug your instrument into your iPhone or iPad and get yourself this nifty tool.
It includes a plethora of different amps and effects, allowing you to practice and create new sounds without having to spend too much money. You even get recording and mixing capabilities, just in case you want to get creative while you are at it.
This app is free, but it does have a long list of available in-app purchases.
Any DJs in the house? Traktor DJ is your go-to DJ application. This application comes with a plethora of effects, features and complex actions. It is no simple touch-and-go app, though. It definitely has a learning curve, as it is actually meant for professional DJs.
The app itself is only $4.99, but if you want to get serious Traktor also offers all kinds of controls and accessories. You can literally hook up physical, full-fledged controls to it, which do happen to cost a pretty penny.
Algoriddm djay 2
Traktor is awesome, but it’s wise to consider that the “best” option is better selected when you consider your own needs. Very few people need a complex and full-fledged DJ experience like the one Traktor offers. Many of us would be much happier with the djay 2 app.
This is a much more casual and straight-forward DJ app. You can easily mix between songs, but other complicated mix features are taken out of the equation. The app does include one awesome feature, though – it has Spotify integration. If you have your Spotify set up, you won’t even need to work on your playlists anymore.
This is a great app for DJs who want to bring the party to smaller gatherings and more casual scenarios. It’s also only $4.99.
