Audi A1 Citycarver: What makes a car city?

by Nicole on November 3, 2019

The Audi A1 Citycarver is basically a normal A1 Sportback with a two-inch lift and a bit of SUV styling thrown in. You’ll find a bit of asthetic ruggedness with black wheel arch protections, an octagonal front grill which is usually found on Audi’s SUVs and a blacked-out badge.

The price is higher than the A1 Sportback, 1,800 Euro and a range of engine options. None of which are plug in hybrid. Providing the option to be charged by a wall plug in 3 hours and give you 50km of range would have really made this a car for an urban center. Most people don’t drive more than 50km in one day which would have made this variation ideal for cities.

The interior has a lot more flare than what we’re used to in an Audi, the digital cockpit is a focal point. The driver-oriented dashboard groups together with air vents breaking up the control panels and digital instrument cluster. The vents are around the center tunnel console and doors sport accents come in either either mint, copper, orange or silver-gray to contrast with the surrounding black architecture. Audi is known for high quality interiors so we were a bit surprised when the finish of the materials didn’t seem quite a premium as usual, we were wondering if Tesla’s extremely cheap interiors is trickling down to the premium OEMs since they’ve proven that you can charge a premium of interiors which have a similar finish to a budget car. Having said that, the A1 Citycarver looks premium, you can’t say that about Tesla’s interiors.

The 10.1-inch touch display, the digital instrument cluster with AUDI virtual cockpit and MMI navigation offers an abundance of connectivity to aid city life. We have options for a full size USB or USB Type C which futureproofs your car and will appease any early adopter. The Qi wireless charging is also a nice touch, who doesn’t love throwing your phone down and having it charge? The A1 City carver will also use your phones Bluetooth connection to enhance your phones connectivity making the car act like a giant antenna for your phone.

The A1 Citycarver has some strong connectivity features built in that go beyond the phone. You’ll be able to use your infotainment system to find parking spots. C2X communication also comes standard, if you’re not familar with C2X it allows cars to speak to each other real time on the road. If a car ahead comes across a road problem it can warn the cars behind it, the ultimate goal is to make our roads safe. VW made it standard in the Golf 8 so we’re going to be seeing more and more cars in the VW group come with this feature.

Audi is also working with municipalities to gain access to the traffic infrastructure. This means the car can suggest the perfect speed for you to hit all green lights on your drive. In the US Audi has relationships with 90 cities, in Germany it’s just Ingolstadt, where Audi has its HQ. We expect more cities to be added just like the US which began with Los Angeles.

The interior is completed with a tailored bang & olufsen 3D premium sound system that delivers crisp, unique noise for all passengers, no matter the hustle and bustle outside.

The AUDI A1 Citycarver blends into urban life thanks not only to its design but also its performance. it offers four drive select modes – auto, efficiency, individual and dynamic – with the latter delivering a nibble drive owing to its handling system and adjusted suspension. the 30 TFSI engine capably zips along with 85 kw and 200 Nm of torque, fitting into city centers with a fuel consumption of 5.4 to 5.2 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions limited to 122 to 118g per km.

The boot also offers a lot of space, 12.5 cubic feet isn’t much less than in the outgoing Golf, which offers 13.4 cubes. A shelf in the back provides a flat surface, but it’s removable to accommodate taller items.

If you’d like to watch the video above you’ll see me playing Tetris with the trunk showing off exactly how many things you can fit in!

The Audi A1 Citycarver is modified for city living, the slightly higher profile and narrow body make is a good choice for tight streets and tough parking spots. The strong connectivity features make it ideal for early adopters and urbanits.
