After years of rumors and anticipation, Amazon has finally launched its very own smartphone, naming it the Fire Phone. The Amazon Fire Phone is not your typical smartphone, either. It comes with some really good specs and features that are simply unheard of.
Amazon Fire Phone specs
- 4.7-inch IPS LCD HD display
- 2.2 GHz quad-core processor
- 2 GB of RAM
- 13 MP camera
The device is pretty well-designed, even if not made with your premium metal materials. It has a rubberized frame, Gorilla Glass on the front and back, and aluminum buttons. Amazon has also changed the charger to make it much more stable and less “wobbly”. Their injection-molded steel connector grants a better fit to your smartphone. Jeff Bezos says this device is perfect for one-handed use.
Of course, the whole reason why Amazon is making this phone is to push its own services. You will definitely have access to the Amazon App Store, Kindle Books, Prime Music, Amazon video, Kindle Newsstand and all the works. There is some very enticing exclusives Amazon Fire Phone users are getting, though.
For starters, Fire Phone users will get unlimited photo storage from Amazon Cloud Drive. Yes, unlimited! In addition, there will be direct Mayday access from your smartphone, a service Amazon uses to give you direct help with Amazon’s products and services. There’s even a button for it!
In addition, those who purchase the device will get a year of free Prime service, which is also a great deal,
Firefly is one of Amazon’s most unique features in this device. In a way, it works like Google Goggles. It’s Amazon’s way of integrating photos as a tool. You can walk into a store and take a picture of a product, only to be re-directed to Amazon’s option, for example.
It can also be used for searching Movies, QR codes, songs, books, URLs and more. Hell, you can even take a picture of a phone number or email address and save it to your smarpthone! Quite convenient, if you ask us.
Amazon has managed to build glassless 3D viewing and rendering to make it one of the best 3D smartphones available. The image is said to look better than other 3D implementations and the phone has some cool features.
There are 3D wallpapers for the lockscreen, which move along with your smartphone, giving you a rather fun perspective. You can also tilt and manage Maps the same way. It also works with shopping – you can use these 3D features and tilting actions to go through clothing and other products.
How is this possible? How can the phone follow you? Amazon is not only using the the gyroscope, the Fire Phone actually knows where your head is! They do this by using 4 corner cameras and one in the middle, all with infrared sensors to combat low-light situations.
And now for the deciding factor – how much will this phone cost? The Amazon Fire Phone will cost $199 for the 32 GB version, while the 64 GB version will set you back $299, both after signing a 2-year contract with AT&T. And yes, this is an AT&T-exclusive phone, which we know many of you won’t like.
This means the Fire Phone will not be cheap, as we previously expected. This phone is on par with high-end devices currently in the market. There is no mention on release dates, but you can pre-order it as soon as today. You will also be able to buy it off-contract for $649
