Ultrabooks are all the rage for portability, but there is no question that you do sacrifice on gaming and customization. If you’re in the market for a powerful portable unit that won’t break the bank, Aftershock has just released the X11 which should satisfy pretty much all of your needs.
The Aftershock X11 is 1l.6 inches and has a Ivy Bridge HM76 chipset under the hood with a customizable amount of RAM. It has connectivity options that include a full size VGA port, HDMI, 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 2.0, audio jacks, Ethernet and a kensington lock. It weighs in at the high end of the Ultrabook scale at 1.72kg and has 11.5 x 8.3 x 1.5 inch dimensions. It has a 1366 x 768 display with the option to upgrade it to a matte display if you’re keen to actually game on the go, I’m a little disappointed they didn’t do it the other way around and make you pay for the glare.
The big question for most people looking for a gaming laptop is how did it handle Battlefield 3?! The GT650M was able to churn out over 60fps on the medium setting. Sleeping Dogs is a very graphically demanding game which was able to produce 69.9fps with a medium setting.
There isn’t much not to love about this device as long as you can get past its chunk functional design in a time when razor thin Ultrabooks are en vogue. It would have been nice if they had allowed for the option to upgrade to a HD display, anyone who is looking to build the perfect portable gaming laptop would likely pick a pixel dense panel. The one thing that some may not be able to over look is the pitiful battery life since normal productivity is around 3 hours and gaming will only get you an hour.
Clearly the performance of the X11 will win the heart of any gamer and it’s all packed into an 11.6 inch frame which is pretty rare these days. The build quality is excellent and even though it only has a single heating vent it doesn’t get scalding hot. But what is perhaps the most amazing thing about this unit is your ability to customize it for a reasonable price.
