Gotta love pack rats, an audio cassette of Steve Jobs speaking at the 1983 International Design Conference in Aspen. The interview deals with the future of technology and it’s he’s pretty much on the money with everything that he says. This is a hidden gem worth listening to!

Steve Jobs Interview from 1983 Discovered with Predictions of the Future

Jobs talks about voice recognition, early networking, and predicts that it’d be 5 years before office networking would be working at a usable level and 10 to 15 years before home networking would be solved. If you were paying attention back in 1983 you’d get an early look at Apple’s timeline for rolling out some of the tech.

Portable computers are going to be able to get information from wherever they are thanks to radio linke and that people will spend more time with their personal computers than with their cars.

“[Apple's strategy is to] put an incredibly great computer in a book that you can carry around with you that you can learn how to use in 20 minutes.”

He also added that the record industry will change as the software industry changes, removing the need for brick-and-mortar stores altogether. I won’t give too much more away since you should really hit play and hear it for your self.

  1. Thanks, really an interesting talk! Way too optimistic on the laptop, but surprisingly exact on the trial-software download system.
Who’s able to tell us anything about which technologies we’re going to use withing 10 years from today? Seems like right now there are very few people knowing exactly what to do and just needing time to solve technical problems. Most of the industry rather seems to be wondering what to do next…
