Samsung is leading the way toward a new era of displays. Their transparent and flexible displays were just a concept when we first reported on it, but now the company has elegant square tiles available for sale in September. The new square display, the Samsung UD22B is 21.6 inches, uses a square 1:1 aspect ratio in lieu of the traditional widescreen format and when placed side by side, have only a 5.5 millimeter gap between them. This screen isn’t transparent, but it’s cousin is.
The NL22B is also made in square tiles, but this display is truly transparent. You can see right through the image to whatever is behind the tile. Transparency opens up new advertising possibilities for interactive displays. Samsung showed off this new technology at CES earlier this year.
Samsung’s plan is to sell the displays complete with metal frame, LED illuminated back panel and side glass panels. The display can hook up to any PC and has its own speakers. The displays will go on sale in September.
