According to a fresh report by the Reuters, Samsung Electronics is working on a new smartphone that it plans to debut sometime next month. Now, being the world’s biggest mobilephone manufacturer, this is no surprising news. Samsung is known to churn out new models by the dozens each passing month. So what’s special here?! The interesting bit here is that this handset might turn out to be revolutionary considering the fact that this is rumoured to sport a curved display!
Samsung has in the past shown off a bunch of prototype and concept devices that had curved displays. Back then, they were prohibitively expensive to manufacture. This time however, if all goes well, we might be using the first commercial mobile phones with curved displays.
Display being the most critical element of a smartphone nowadays, any improvement on this front would benefit the mobilephones industry. The current trend has been centered around increasing the resolution and the colour reproduction and we have almost come to a point where companies are running out of ideas to differentiate their displays from their competitors. That’s where curved displays come into picture. The shape of the modern smartphone is restricted to a block shape only because of the fact that the display used by these products are rigid and inflexible – thereby having to build the phone around the display. Come flexible and curved displays, companies and users alike would get a lot more creative freedom to utilize them in ways people might have not even thought of.
There is some sort of official confirmation from Samsung regarding this. It came from none other than Samsung’s mobile business head of strategic marketing, D.J. Lee. who quipped; “We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October.”
I already foresee the next version of the Galaxy Gear to sport a curved and flexible display. What do you think?
