Samsung and OnePlus are going nuts with software news today. Those who are looking to get an affordable phone also get good news, though.
Samsung has been dealing with Tizen as carefully as possible. While they plan to bring it to the smartphone market, the new operating system is not to jeopardize Samsung’s powerful Android presence. Instead, the company is testing the waters with its other products.
We now have devices like the Gear smartwatches and the Samsung Z1 carrying Tizen. Samsung is not stopping there, as we are learning all Samsung Smart TVs in 2015 will carry the Samsung-developed operating system.
The new operating system is said to be simple and intuitive, while offering a powerful set of features that will especially please Samsung users. Galaxy phones and tablets will be able to stream live TV from these TVs, for example. Even if the TV itself is turned off!
Opinion: Unlike other gimmicky exclusive features, this happens to be a very good incentive for buying a Samsung TV. And if you have a Samsung TV, it’s a good incentive to buy Samsung devices.
OnePlus is working very hard at making its own ROM, so they want to show off their progress. The company has released an alpha version of its ROM, which just so happens to be based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Users can literally go and install it right now (check out the OnePlus forums for instructions and details). Beware, this is an alpha ROM and it’s bound to come with some bugs. Whether these bugs are small or huge, you are doing this at your own risk.
With that said, we should also mention that this ROM is not exactly a huge deal for consumers just yet. In fact, it’s in such early stages that it looks pretty much like the stock Android AOSP experience.
Opinion: I wouldn’t rush to install this ROM to use it as a daily driver. Tinkerers will love seeing how the new ROM evolves, though. Are you installing?
Did you enjoy our hands-on coverage with the Honor 6 Plus? It’s a great phone for the price, and now it can be yours for only $399. The device has been launched at oppomart.com, so have at it!
As a reminder, specs include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 1.8 GHz octa-core Kirin K925, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, two 8 MP cameras and a 3600 mAh battery.
Opinion: That is one hell of a deal, guys. Gotta give it to the Honor team. These specs are up there with the high-end smartphones.
