Samsung India has issued fresh press invites to bloggers and members of the press to an event they have scheduled on the 22nd of January 2013. The Invite talks about the unveiling of its “Newest Galaxy” at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
Rumor has it that Samsung would be unveiling not one – but two handsets in the country on this day. The two handsets being the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Grand Phablet and the much talked about Galaxy S III Mini – an affordable Galaxy S III replacement.
I had not long ago talked about the Samsung Galaxy Grand in detail and why a handset of that sort (which has been lampooned by most of the western press) makes sense in a country like India – and in emerging markets in general - and looks like Samsung seems to be well aware of the potential that a huge market like India holds for them. The other handset – the Galaxy S III Mini has been around for quite some time now – but hasn’t seen an India launch yet and Samsung thinks its about time they bring that phone to the country. There were also talks going on about the possibility of these launches happening on the 17th – which eventually didn’t happen. Anyway, I would be attending the event on the 22nd and will be reporting from there.
With news coming in about the sales of high end smartphones reaching a saturation point in most of the developed economies, it has become important that smartphone manufacturers seek asylum in developing economies where there is huge untapped potential for smartphones. If the rumored launches of these two mid range phones does turn out to be true, we are safe to assume that Samsung is already planning well and is doing its bit to consolidate its position as the smartphones leader.
Anyway, we will be back with more on this on the 22nd!
