Apple’s archrival Samsung too is on a quest to build its own smartwatch according to fresh reports flying in. The company’s R&D department have been working on such a product and has filed Patent documents related to the same in the US Patent and Trademark Office

Patent Documents Reveal Samsung’s Smartwatch Intentions

The device has been christened to be the Samsung Galaxy Gear and it has been categorized under the “wearable digital electronic device” category which includes “the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages” – as defined by the Patent Office. Samsung already seems to have registered the Samsung Gear” trademark in South Korea. From what we know now, this device would run Android – as Samsung’s “Galaxy” branded devices all run on this platform.

When this product arrives sometime in 2014, it would likely have some stiff competition from Apple’s iWatch and Microsoft’s Surface Watch. Sony in the meantime has managed to trump all its competition and is readying to launch its own Android powered smartwatch next month.

As for the Galaxy Gear, this device is expected to “come with a body made of flexible displays and elastic materials that can be used while wrapped around a wrist or flattened out” – as per a filing that was submitted back in May at the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

With all these compainies vying to bring their own versions of the smartwatch, looks like 2013 -14 would be the year of the smartwatches – just like 2010 was of Tablets!

Do you fancy owning one of these devices when they are launched in the next few months?
