Qualcomm is expanding the Snapdragon family with two new quad core CPU’s: the Snapdragon S4 MSM8226 and MSM8626. The newest additions to Qualcomm’s CPU line-up are intended for high end smartphones and will start to appear in devices in the second half of 2013.
The clock rate of the two chips is likely to land in the 1.2 to 1.5 GHz range. They are designed especially for the Chinese market, because there is support in China for all the broadband wireless networks on board the CPU. The chips can use TD SCDMA, CDMA 1xAdv and HSPA +. The processors are also suitable for multi-SIM smartphones because dual SIM with dual standby and dual SIM with dual active are possible with these chips. In addition, GPS (USA / Europe), GLONASS (Russia) and Beidou (China) navigation systems work with the newest Snapdragon CPU’s.
Other features of the processors include the 28-nanometer-scale, an integrated Qualcomm Adreno 305 GPU and support for cameras with up to 13 megapixels and 1080p video. Qualcomm also offers additional reference designs of the two new ARM chips from production. The variants are called QRD8226 and QRD8626 and allow device manufacturers to develop their own smartphones based on the prefabricated designs so that when the chips become available, they can get smartphones with the newest chips on the market quickly. The first samples of the new S4 CPU’s from Qualcomm will be available in the second quarter of 2013.
