We are live in Beijing, taking a look at Oppo’s latest midrange devices. There’s something very special about the Oppo R7 – it has a great design and metal unibody. This reminds us of a certain other smartphone.
Of course we are talking about the HTC One M9 here, so we are putting these right up against each other. Which one will come out on top? The HTC One M9 or the Oppo R7? Let’s take a look at the specs first.

Design and build quality
Like we mentioned before, there’s a lot of similarities between these two smartphones. Both have a 5-inch display and have an awesome metal unibody design. They also both happen to feel super solid and seem to be able to take a good beating.
There’s a couple main design differences. For starters, the Oppo R7 seems much shorter, which may make it more comfortable to hold and operate. You can thank the lack of bottom speaker and worthless branding bezel for that. All yo can see below the screen, on the R7, is the trio of capacitive buttons.
The other difference is the thickness. The Oppo R7 is significantly thinner and lighter. So this makes the Oppo R7 sleeker and more elegant, but many of you happen to love the girth the HTC One M9 offers. It’s a matter of preference, really, but both phones are gorgeous.
Performance and storage
So there’s really no competition here. I mean the HTC One M9 is a flagship, high-end smartphone with a powerful Snapdragon 810 processor. Meanwhile, the Oppo R7 is doing just fine with a Snapdragon 615. It can get things done in a good fashion, but it won’t get close to the level of performance you can find on the HTC One M9.
They both have a good amount of RAM, though, which means they should be equally as good at handling multiple tasks at a time. Once again, one will take care of them a bit slower, but both can handle all them apps and tabs.
In terms of storage, both support microSD cards, but the HTC One M9 comes with 32 GB out of the box. Oppo R7 users have to conform with as low as 16 GB. Just something to consider if you really care about storage.
So this one will be more about preference. The Oppo R7 sports an AMOLED screen, which offers much more vibrant and saturated colors. In addition, black hues are amazingly deep. This makes for a great viewing experience and awesome viewing angles, but they may be a bit exaggerated to those who prefer more natural colors, which I happen to prefer.
On the other hand, the HTC One M9 is touting a Super LCD 3 panel. Its colors will be much more natural and the screen should be brighter. Both phones have a 1080p definition, but we have often said a good 1080p panel is much better than an over-hypes 2K screen. And boy, these are both great panels. Once again, it’s a matter of preference.
So we had to mention this one, as it will be a big factor to consider when you are trying to see which of these devices you should get. HTC’s dual BoomSound speakers are unparalleled. I mean, man! These sound good. The sound is full, crisp and very stable.
Don’t get me wrong, the Oppo R7 sounds great too, but nothing compared to the HTC One M9.
Here’s another factor to consider. HTC keeps trying to make great cameras, but they just keep failing every time. The HTC One M9 wasn’t the exception, guys. I mean this 20 MP camera is just OK. Nothing to write home about.
Meanwhile, we are pretty impressed with the camera Oppo has put in this phone. All images are super crisp, and you can see so much details in your shots. Just take a look at the demo in the video. You will see.
So the real question here is whether you should just go for the awesome HTC One M9 or save some bucks and get yourself a more affordable Oppo R7. The HTC One M9 is priced above the $600 mark. Oppo is selling the R7 for about $400. That is a significant price drop, so how can you make your choice? Let’s tell you the pros and cons.
So if you don’t care about losing some performance and want a thinner phone with a better camera, you should just get yourself an Oppo R7. The HTC One M9 is for those who want the most power, sound and solid body.
The screen will be a matter of preference, but they are both great. And the HTC One M9 does have a larger body, but remember the Oppo R7 has a less power hungry processor. I figure they should have relatively similar battery life.
So – which one are you getting?
