Right in the middle of the week we have some grand announcements coming in over from folks over at BlackBerry – a company which isn’t really enjoying the best of times right now. To start with, they have just announced a brand new OS 10 toting handset called the Z30. We would be talking about that in a bit. The other major news that is coming in from them is that BBM for Android and iOS which was promised quite some time ago is all set to arrive on both these platforms by Sunday, 22 September 2013.
Let’s now check out what the BlackBery Z30 is all about. You might not be able to make it out using the image above this paragraph- but you are currently looking at the BlackBerry with the largest display ever. That’s right – the Z30 is the first BlackBerry smartphone to tote a 5 inch display! This makes it significantly larger than the Z10 which until now held that crown with its 4.2 inch panel. What however doesn’t sound great specifications wise is the fact that the resolution of this 5 inch panel is almost the same as that of the Z10 – leading to a display that wouldn’t be just as sharp. But then, having used a bunch of 5 inch handsets with a 720p display, I might as well add that it definitely isn’t something you call “terrible”. But then, for a product that replaces the Z10 as the flagship, a slight upgrade to the resolution would have been great. Oh and lest I forget, that’s an AMOLED display right there!
As for the other features on the phone, let me begin by saying that the device packs in the dual core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with the CPU running at 1.7 Ghz – a slight step up from the 1.5Ghz CPU on the Z10. There is ample 2 GB worth of RAM under the hood which should translate to a great user experience with little or no lags. There is a dedicated Graphics chip as well that is designed to help you folks with improving the graphics and gaming performance. The Z30 gets an 8 megapixel camera along with the ability to capture full HD movies. The front camera can also snap pictures at a decent 2 megapixels and movies at 720p. To power all this hardware, there is a 2880 mAH battery under the cover. Now considering the kind of a lean and mean OS that OS 10 is, this should translate to some decent sounding day long battery life.
On the software front, the biggest news here is that the Z30 when launched in the weeks to come, will be loaded with BlackBerry OS 10.2 – the updated version. This version packs in a bunch of bug fixes and feature additions. Also to be noted is the fact that the rest of the BlackBerry pack – would be receiving the update to OS 10.2 by mid October.
Talking about software reminds me. How many of you non BlackBerry users plan to download and use BBM once it appears next week? I mean, you already have all those plethora of messaging apps out there. Isn’t like BBM too late into the party now?
