A tablet with a good screen is worth its weight in gold, and we have really been marveling over the Acer Iconia Tab 8. This tablet has a gorgeous 8-inch 1920x1200p IPS LCD display. It may not have that QHD resolution, but the colors are vibrant and visually astounding.
The Acer Iconia Tab 8’s superior display makes it a perfect fit for consuming media. It entices you to watch more visually stunning content, which we have already talked about.
Today we want to focus on great video playing/streaming apps we have been really enjoying on this tablet. Of course, you can enjoy these with any device. The experience will simply be glorified if you have an outstanding display.
Of course, you could check out YouTube, Netflix and all of those. They are great, but there is so much more out there to explore! We are focusing on the less mainstream apps here. Let’s take a look at them!
Also, you can always click on the titles to be re-directed to the apps’ download pages.
Crackle is one of the best apps for watching shows and movies on. It’s free (with ads) and has a very good selection for the price. Of course, it won’t beat subscription services like Netflix, but it’s a great app for enjoying some good video.
Sadly, this one is not available for everyone. Crackle can only be enjoyed by users in the USA, Canada, Australia and 18 countries across Latin America. It’s definitely worth a try if your country is included in the list, though!
SnagFilms is another great video streaming app you can have for free. It’s also a great source for those who like their independent movies, as they have a great selection of those.
You will also find “action-adventure films, bollywood movies, gay and lesbian movies, and critically acclaimed documentaries.” New shows and videos are added frequently, so be sure you won’t run out of interesting things to watch.
Vevo is known for hosting the hottest and latest music videos in the industry. You are more than likely to find some of the best modern tunes here. And because these are official videos, the quality is always pristine.
Are you a fan of the oldies, but goodies? Full Classic Movies is an app that offers… full classic movies. You can find all kinds of old movies in this app. There’s a selection of about 500 films, which are all free and legal. They are public domain, that’s how old these movies are.
Though underrated and not as popular it should be, many of us would consider BSPlayer among the best video players around. Let’s start by mentioning it supports pretty much any video file you throw at it. supported formats include avi, divx, flv, mkv, mov, mpg, mts, mp4, m4v, rmvb, wmv, 3gp, mp3, flac and streaming content such as RTMP, RTSP, MMS (tcp, http), HTTP Live stream, HTTP.
It also has some very neat features, like the ability to automatically download subtitles, and it also supports multiple audio streams. You can even watch your videos in a pop-up window if you need to multi-task, and multi-core supports makes decoding a breeze.
BSPlayer can be had for free, but you can also pay $6.75 for the ad-less version. It’s a great option for local video playing, so give it a go.
Plex for Android will cost you $4.99, and the service itself costs some more, but it’s one of the best ways to play local files. Well, they are not exactly local, they are shared within your network, from a media server you can create from a central PC.
This is your best bet if you have a large collection of movies and content in your possession. It also supports cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox and Box, as well as offering access to other streaming services.
Some say magazines and print media are dying, but these companies do a great job at staying relevant. They target their audiences with outstanding content, which is why they are alive, even if online.
Think of Zinio as your magazine central, where you can browse, purchase and enjoy magazines. Having a nice screen will make your experience even better. We love using the Acer Iconia Tab 8 with this app – it literally looks like printed paper.

Intel provided an Acer Iconia Tab 8 with the expectation of content around the device be written and produced by Mobile Geeks. Participants are entered into a contest to win an Amazon gift card, to be honest, we’re in it for the tablet. All opinions are 100% our own.
