News: ASUS teases phone with optical zoom, Alcatel bringing affordable Watch, ZTE Imperial 2 coming in at $100

ASUS, Alcatel and ZTE are teasing and announcing an array of new products, including new phones and wearables. Are any of these right for you?

ASUS teases phone with optical zoom

Now we are starting to understand what ASUS meant when they were teasing their new ZenPhone along with the quote “see what others can’t see”. The company has released yet another teaser, this time only 13 seconds long and with morse code.

The morse code reads “optical zoom”. Of course, now we know what to expect from the mysterious device. We are only a few days away from the unveiling, so make sure to stay tuned to Mobile Geeks and we will show you all about it.

Opinion: I am very casual about mobile photography, as I usually move to my DSLR if I want a better quality image. This is why I wouldn’t care much for optical zoom, but I know many of you would. Being able to zoom in without losing quality is a huge deal. Would you spend your hard-earned money on a good phone with optical zoom?

Alcatel Watch to take on the market with an affordable price point

Alcatel has announced a new smartwatch, simply called Watch. That’s not a very creative or unique name, but the wearable aims to differentiate itself from the competition in other ways. For starters, it’s said to be very affordable and will pair with any Android device.

Sadly, we have no news on price, availability or specs, but we do know a few general details on the Alcatel Watch. Its round shape will make it look very classic, a look we know many of you love. In addition, it will come in a variety of designs. We can see in the image below that there are both “sporty” and “dressy” types.

As for features, it is said to be able to monitor your physical activity, control music, work as a shutter remote for your phone and receive notifications.

Opinion: Just how affordable is affordable? Even if the smartwatch was $100, there are already options like Pebble around. We know this device offers a bit more, but we doubt Alcatel can really go as low as $100, anyways.

ZTE Imperial 2 coming to US Cellular for only $100

A new affordable phone from ZTE has arrived at US Cellular. The ZTE Imperial 2 comes in at a minute $100 price point. That would be off-contract, but you can also get it at $0 down on a 2-year contract.

What does a Benjamin get you, though? Turns out the device is not too bad! Specs include a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, a 5-inch qHD display, a 5 MP camera and a 2,300 mAh battery.

Opinion: This is definitely not a bad phone. It’s pretty much like a Moto E! The only downside I can see is the qHD definition – I really wish it was 720p with an slightly higher price. But of course, at only $100 you can’t complain too much!
