How to Play Travel Frog & Tips & Tricks

Neko Atsume has come out with a new hit that’s much slower than it’s cat collecting smash hit from a few years ago. The appeal and the frustration is that you have no control over your Frog. You have no control over when it leaves or comes back, they could be gone for a few hours or a few days and the destination is completely random. In Travel Frog patience is a virtue but we do have a few tips and tricks we’ve picked up along the way to help influence your Frog. Again, if you do everything ‘right’ your Frog still might not want to head to Kyuushuu, but we’re still going to give him that grape scone and focaccia and hope for the best!

Getting Started

1) Copy and Paste 旅かえる, then search and download it. You can also search Travel Frog, which is the easiest, alternatively, Tabikaeru or Neko Atsume will also get you there. Or just click here for Android and here for iOS.
2) Open the game and tap on スタート
3) Tap on 同意します on lower left side, which means you agree with regular agreements
4) Tap on the Frog, then you name him with one to five characters, then tap on OK.
5) As the frog goes inside of his house, you go in there by tapping the house icon on the right lower corner.
6) He is busy with packing for his first trip, and you are supposed to provide some food for him. Go outside by tapping the mailbox icon on the right lower corner, which leads you to the outside, his front yard. You harvest clovers and get two four leaf clovers, which are ones of good luck charms, and 18 regular clovers, which are currency when you buy food and goods. The number of clovers displays in the box on the top left side.
7) You go to the shopping page by tapping the shopping bags(two small paper bags) icon on the top of House icon on the right lower corner. Tap on a Scone, which is only one thing you can afford now. Tap on はい, you complete the purchase.
8) You go to him by tapping the house icon, and tap on したく, which means the preps, icon on the lower left side, then the blue box opens up, which is the inside of his travel bag.
9) Tap on the top left side おべんとう(Bento – lunch) box, the belongings box opens, and tap on Scone, then tap on the top right side おまもり(good luck charm) box, and tap on Four Leaf Clover. The lower box which has two smaller box is for the travel gears, but you do not have any now, So just tap on かんりょう(finished).
10) For his first trip, you have to close the game and re-start it.
11) After he takes off, you are given 500 regular clovers and one Four Leaf Clover. Now you can do some shopping 🙂

How to Feed Your Frog & stock the backpack

Feeding your Frog is one of the few things in the game that you have control over. Combining different foods and charms can influence the destination. There are no guarantees but like any parent, all you can do is provide the tools, it’s up to your Frog to make the most out of it.

1. Your Frog needs supplies when he travels, from the yard, head home and at the bottom left there is where you can offer him supplies.
2. You have three main sections: Food (おべんとう), Charms (おまもり) and Tools(どうぐ) below. Press on each section to get the Belongings screen, and fill the slots as you wish. After you put the necessary items in the bag, press the “Finish” button (かんりょう), and the frog will be ready for its journey!
3. The second yellow panel is where you prepare for your Frog’s travels. There is the second preparation stage, which is that you put out/line up the necessary items on his desk つくえ, not in his bag. You can go there by tapping the arrow on the right side of the traveling bag box, or you can go there directly from したくwhile he is out. The frog will take off even when you have not done a proper preparation for him. This “On the desk(or table)” preparation is for that type of occasions. So you do not have to worry even when you are too busy to play it for a while. The frog will take whatever available on the table when he takes off even in the case there is nothing in his bag. Remember, the most important item is food. If he takes off without one, he may not return to his home, he will be missing. If that happens, all you have to do is to put some food out on his table. So keep some food always on the table, and you can leave two food items there. At the bottom of the desk/table box, you see the characters かたづける, unlike the one at the bottom of his bag box, this means cleaning up the desk/table. This puts things away so the Frog can’t use them.
4. It’s important to always have food in the preparation area, when it comes back from its trip, you’ll notice that it automatically move the items to the backpack. You’ll almost notice when it’s out you can’t access the backpack because it’s out on the adventure with your Frog.

Food Translations & Descriptions

The food travel items can only be bought one time, the Natural tent above, has a “Sold Out” sign (売り切れ) over the price, meaning the item is no longer available.

Descriptions of Foods that Can be given as a gift, important when determining what to feed the friends who stop by the yard. Each friend has a different preference so it’s important to feed the friend his favorite food to get the most clovers.

How to Collect Clovers

1. Pick them from the yard. 20 is the maximum clovers that will grow in the yard, it takes 3 hours for them all to be done growing. If you harvest a few before they’ve all grown in, it will take 3 hours from that point for all the clovers to appear.
2. The frog has friends that come to visit in the yard from time to time. You can feed them by tapping on them. The Frog brings home food from his travels specifically to share with his friends.
3. Three animals stop by your yard: a snail named Maimai, a bee named Bunbun, and a tortoise named Pukapuka. Each one has its own food preferences, but they all offer the same benefit: Three-leaf Clovers!
4. Your frog’s friends will grant you clovers when they leave, with the amount being based on the food you give them while visiting. You obviously want to give them the food they like best to get the most from their visits. We have a Frog Friend’s food preferences list below.

Travel Frog Friends Food Preferences

Each of the Frog’s friends has 4 different levels of enjoyment around the foods you feed them. You’ll want to give them the foods they like the most, getting these foods can be tricky since your Frog will have to visit different places to bring back food.
For example, the Southern Rice Cookie and Roasted Rice Stick (North), Onsen Buns (East), and the Five Color Beans and Tile Rice Cracker (South). The best way to diversify your frog’s travel locations is to get Province Tickets from the Lottery. You can get tickets for provinces in all four directions, each one with its own specialties. To learn more about how to do this, visit the Lottery Section.
There is no way to guarantee you’ll be gifted one of the regional specialties, but going significantly increase the chance of getting some.

Love it: Five color beans, strawberry, steamed rice cake, persimmon, banana, tile rice cracker, water, orange, apple, peach, southern rice cookies, hardtack, fried sweet noodles
Favorite: Chestnuts, tea leaves

Bunbun – The Bee

Neutral – Five color beans, onsen buns, strawberry, peach

If you’re only getting Maimai, hang in there, the more well traveled your frog is the more likely you are to see Bunbun and Pukapuka.

Be Zen: Your Frog will take as much time as they like eating, reading, writing, dozing and making something with the knife. You do not have any control over it. Prepare, and wait. There is nothing else you can do.

How to Play the Lottery

You get lottery tickets after journeys and from visitors, the rewards are useful in gameplay, you can win different items that your Frog can take with it. Some of these items can influence where your frog travels to.

If you have 5 tickets, press the Turn button (まわす), and you’ll get a ball. The ball can be yellow, red, green, blue or, most often, white. To see the different prizes you can get, press the yellow Prize List button (景品一覧 ).

Understanding your Lottery Related items:

Yellow Ball will give you a ticket (きっぷ). Each ticket will take you on a trip to a distant location, with each color corresponding to a cardinal direction (East, West, South and North.)

Red Ball will give you a bag of “Konpeito” candy (金平糖), in four different flavors: strawberry, lemon, grape or melon. You can put this candy in your frog’s bag for its journeys.

Green Ball will give you a bag of Egg Biscuits (たまごぼうろ), in five different flavors: carrot, pumpkin, soybean, milk and burdock. This can also be given to the frog.

Blue Ball will give you a charm (お守り) in one of five colors: yellow, white, red, blue or pink. Each one offers protection for your travel in one cardinal direction (Yellow for East, White for West, Red for South and Blue for North), while the pink protects in an unknown place.

White Ball means you’ve lost, and will only reward you with 1 ticket (ふくびき券) for the lottery.

Tabi-kaeru is easy to play, but it seems to have a bit more complexity than Neko Atsume has since the combination of food, gears, charms and his titles seem to influence his choice of destinations.

How to get your frog to travel to different places

They can determine the direction he takes, each colors represent the directions like east, west, north and south. Also pink one takes him to the mystery (unknown) area. You should also consider changing your Frog’s Title to get it to take different types of trips.

Bentou pictures

Stellaria Sandwich & Chive Pierogi + ?? We’re unsure what the 3rd requirement is!

This is a set of three pictures that vary based on the food you sent the frog out with. I’m not sure of the exact requirements for these pictures, but they appear to require the frog have two different lunches on-hand for its friends. However, we know you can only put one thing in its bag, so you likely have to play far enough into the game to have regular interactions with your friends.

Tent Pictures

Yes, your frog will bring back special pictures based on the tools you send it out with! The photo changes depending on what tent you’ve provided it with, if you see the item section above you’ll see what tent related to what surrounding.

There are seven separate pictures in this set, above is the natural tent, to get the other pictures you must send your Frog out with the Stylish, or High-Tech Tent items. There is also a photo where it uses a leaf as a tent, it seems he doesn’t need a tent go camping. Another example of this Frog doing whatever it wants!!

Hand Towel Photos

There are seven pictures in this set in total. Three require no actual Hand Towels to be equipped. Two require the Hand Towel (Earth) and two require Hand Towel (Camo). So it’s worth keeping in mind to get the photos of your Frog with a leaf, you shouldn’t always give him a hand towel in his backpack.

Bowl Pictures

There are 6 pictures in the bowl series, 2 don’t actually require a bowl.

There are lots of photos that we haven’t been able to identify wht the requirements are. If you have any good resources, leave a comment and we’ll update the article and share the love.

Change your Frog’s Title

When the frog is home, you can press on it to bring up an information window. There you can see the frog’s name, and change its title (it gets different titles as it goes into more journeys.)

Press OK to change or Cancel (キャンセル) to leave things as it were.

1. Lone Traveler  (ひつりたび)

You get this title when you get back from your first trip, it reduces the chance of other animals joining you on your journey.

2. Title: wandering traveler (さすらいの旅人)

Give your Frog a bowl or tent for longer trips, this should result in more props appearing in your photos.

3. Endless adventurer (はてなき冒險家)

We’re not clear, but it looks like your Frog can take loner trips

4. Searching for Freedom

This is a title obtained at later stages of the game, the Frog’s actions appear even more random, leaving for long period or returning very quickly.

5. Good weather for walking (お さ ん ぽ 日 和)

Will take short trips and will result in more photos on trees, the side of the road. General walking shots.

6. To return Date in sight (かえらぬ旅路)

Your Frog will travel for one day or longer

7. Title: God bless (か み だ の み)

It’s unclear what this does, it may enourage more sporadic behavior

8. Clover Collector (かえるにみっ葉)

Should result in your Frog bringing home more clovers

9. Afriad of Bread (まんじゅう怖い)

Unclear, may result in less bread based products being brough back which could effect the friends.
